CD 133.1 Electrical Supply Co.

Two insulators have the Electrical Supply Co. name on them: the CD 133.1 and the CD 134.  Listed below is information on the CD 133.1. All the listings below are found on smooth base (SB) glass insulators with a mold line over the dome (MLOD).  In an 1888 catalog for the company, the CD 133.1 is listed as the company's catalog number 904.  Although the CD 134 with the catalog number of 905 can be found with that catalog number, to date, no CD 133.1 with the 904 catalog number has been reported.

Reported numbers on the front crown include 22, 25, and 26.
Dates under colors indicate the year the color was first listed in a price guide.

*This listing is not found in the 1999 McDougald's price guide but was added in the next edition published in 2003.
**This listing was numbered as [030] in the 1999 McDougald's price guide but changed to [020] in the 2003 price guide.
***This listing was numbered as [020] in the 1999 McDougald's price guide but deleted in the 2003 price guide.
#In the McDougald's price guide, this embossing is listed with a period after "Co" but the example in my collection does not have a period there nor does the one that sold in the March 2005 Klingensmith auction.
##The mint green color was listed item number 55 in Dwayne Anthony's (Winter 2003) auction catalog.
###In the McDougald's price guide, this embossing is listed with a period after "Co" but the example in my collection does not have a period there.

Where were they used?
Paul Greaves (2005) found  CD 133.1's in "Mexico, at a place called Candelaria (on the ground near an abandoned RR station)."

John W. Sipprell (1971) indicates that Electrical Supply Co. insulators were found in the Denver Metropolitan area but does not indicate if they were CD 133.1's or CD 134's.  Larry Volmer (2005) indicates that the CD 133.1 was found in Denver, Leadville, and Colorado Springs, Colorado.  He says that "in Denver, we use to get them off the backs of houses."

Brent Burger (2005) wrote that "The one I found would have been in the very early 1970's in the Seattle area."

Joe Maurath, Jr. (2005) stated that back in the spring of 1968 he got a couple of those Electrical Supply Co. signals from a Al Perry, a collector in South Dakota. Al apparantly told Joe that he got a bunch of these signals in the South Dakota vicinity and that "these have been excellent traders which have built up my collection."

Who made them?
All Electrical Supply Co. insulators were probably made by Brookfield in Brooklyn, New York.  Brookfield was in business during the time these insulators were sold by The Electrical Supply Co. (1885-1893), the colors the insulators come in are the same colors that Brookfield insulators come in, Brookfield insulators had a crown number just like the Electrical Supply Co. insulators, and Brookfield insulators from this era had a mold line over the dome just like the Electrical Supply Co. insulators.  This relationship has been pointed out by at least three sources (see Case 1971, Klingensmith 2005, and McDougald 1990).

Hobby History.
These insulators do not show up in a price guide as a CD 133.1 until the 1990 McDougald's price guide.  They are listed as a CD 133 in the Milholland's price guides of 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1989, 1986, and 1982.  Both the CD 134 and the CD 133.1 are lumped together into the CD 133 category.  In 1991, the [010] and the old [020] embossings appear in the McDougald's price guide published that year.  In the 2003 McDougald's price guide, two new embossings were added and the light yellow green color.  From the three pieces I have closely examined under a lighted magnifying glass, there is not a period after the "CO" in the embossing despite what is listed in the price guide.  At least one of these pieces also has other puncuation variations.
